Cooking With Kids
Cooking with kids is a great educational and entertaining experience. Children are naturally curious and cooking with kids gives you a chance to stimulate their minds and satisfy their curiosity. Cooking with kids can be as simple as including your children in some of the family meal planning and preparation or it can entail a planned lesson every week just like a school class. Kids love cooking so cooking with kids is something they enjoy and when kids enjoy something, they get involved and interested. This interest is what will sustain the lessons and allow you to sprinkle in a fair helping of education while having fun cooking with kids.
It is important for children to learn about the foods they eat so in your cooking with kids you can include facts about nutrition and proper diet. Cooking with kids isn't just the actual cooking but should include meal planning, shopping and preparation, cooking and clean up.
As part of the meal planning portion of your cooking with kids, you can include much instruction on nutrition and proper diet. You can get a basic food pyramid chart from the U.S. Department of Health or your local Public Health office and use that as a guide if you like. You can also have discussions with the children about the sugar content of the foods they are planning to buy and prepare. Most often kids don't realize just how much sugar is contained in those products they love to consume. As part of your cooking with kids project, you can show them not just on the packaging how much sugar is in the food, but you can also demonstrate to them visually by scooping out spoons full of sugar according to how much is contained in the product. This visual approach can lend a lot of impact to your cooking with kids project.
Once you have covered meal planning in your cooking with kids project, it is time to move on to shopping. It is very important for kids to get a sense of where their food is coming from and just how much it costs. Weekly trips to the supermarket will be so much more educational and fun if the kids are involved and interested and they will learn a lot about budgeting if you include shopping as part of cooking with kids activities. Once the meals are planned and purchased then it is time to prepare the food for cooking. At this point your cooking with kids project should include some basic instruction on food handling and safety. Cooking with kids doesn't just mean frying something up in a pan. Cooking with kids is a great way to teach them how to clean and properly store food so it is safe to eat.
Now that the kids have learned so much, it is time to actually cook the food. Your cooking with kids project will give you a great chance to both instruct your children in the ar of cooking and also have fun together so keept it safe and keep it relaxed and your cooking with kids will be a great success.
