Cooking Safety
Cooking Safety is a serious topic. It encompasses not only the personal safety of the cook, but it also includes the safety of the consumers of what is cooked whether it be in a restaurant or at home, and that can be a deadly serious matter. Cooking is fun for a lot of people, but it is also a necessity for every household. so whether you like it or not, sometimes you will need to cook. Many meals are prepared everyday by people with little or no training in food handling safety and this can be a dangerous situation. It is important for everyone who cooks meals either for themselves or others to have some, at least basic understanding of cooking safety.
The first issue in cooking safety is the safety of the cook during the preparation and cooking of the food. The kitchen can be a very dangerous place for the untrained. A cook will find themselves using knives that could cut them and fire that could burn them. One of the most basic rules of dealing with all these dangers is to be aware. Cooking family meals in our own kitchen can seem like such a casual thing, but one moment of inattention can lead to disaster. It is vital to keep distractions to a minimum and stay focused on the task at hand. Because we are cooking food in our own home, there may be many distractions around that would not be present n a professional cooking environment.
The phone may need answering, the TV may be blaring, the kids may be screaming in the other room and the dog may be under foot. All this can add up to trouble. If your attention is distracted at a critical moment, you could cut yourself while chopping something or urn yourself on a hot pan of oven rack. And if you allow yourself to become involved in some family matter outside the kitchen while things are cooking, you just might allow the kitchen to catch on fire and the house could burn down. Cooking the family's meals is meant to sustain and nurture the family, not harm yourself or them so you must always pay close attention to what you are doing while cooking.
Cooking safety also encompasses serving food that is safe to eat. Once again, because we are dealing with our family in our own home, food safety issues may be treated lightly, but food born illness is no laughing matter. Bacteria doesn't care that this is your home. It will enter and grow and spread if given the chance and it can be deadly. So follow all safe food handling and cooking tips and keep yourself and your loved ones safe. cooking safety is no accident.
